The morning after pill stops the occurrence of pregnancy after unprotected sex. It also comes in handy when another form of contraception does not work, for example, a condom coming off or breaking. Do you urgently require emergency hormonal contraception in Longhill? At Longhill Pharmacy, our pharmacist will not only advise but also assist you to get the right contraception.
Currently, we provide 2 types of emergency contraception:
– Levonelle and ellaOne pills
– IUD
Take the pill immediately or within 3 days (Levonelle) or 5 days (ellaOne) after unprotected sex.
Emergency pills, either Levonelle or ellaOne pills may lead to a headache or abdominal pain. As a result, you may feel sick.
Your next period may either come earlier, later, or be more painful than usual.
The main functional ingredient in Levonelle is levonorgestrel. This is an imitation form of progesterone, the natural hormone that the ovaries produce.
The pill, therefore, stops ovulation from happening.
Take Levonelle within 72 hours (3 days). Nevertheless, it doesn’t interfere with other forms of contraception.
ellaOne contains ulipristal acetate. This interferes with the normal functioning of progesterone. As a result, it delays or stops ovulation.
Take ellaOne within 120 hours (5 days after sex).
Side effects resulting from using the emergency pills are neither serious nor long-lasting. However, it can cause:
– headaches
– abdominal pain
– changes to your next period
– feeling unwell
Go to a GP or pharmacist immediately If the side effects do not disappear after a few days.
No, men cannot buy the emergency tablet. Before buying the pill, a pharmacist may request the woman to fill out a questionnaire. As a result, only the woman is able to purchase the pill.
No, emergency contraception only stops the occurrence of pregnancy. As a result, it does not offer protection against STIs (sexually transmitted infections or diseases), for instance, HIV, chlamydia, or genital warts.
Certain ingredients found in the pills may cause allergic reactions in some women. Therefore, our pharmacist will recommend the best choice.
