A prescription is a legal document that the doctor issues, signs and is responsible for. As a result, an NHS doctor is not capable of converting a private prescription to an NHS Prescription. Similarly, a private doctor cannot provide an NHS prescription. However, if a particular medicine is not available on the NHS, your GP surgery can issue a private prescription. At Longhill Pharmacy, we now offer private prescription in Longhill.

What is Private Prescription in Longhill?

Private prescriptions are medication that your private doctor recommends for you on a private prescription. The prescription is not written on an official NHS prescription. Therefore, the NHS does not pay for it. The patient fully carters for the prescription and is dictated by the medicine’s cost plus the pharmacists’ charge for supplying it.

When can a GP not prescribe a medication?

A GP may not prescribe medicine in the following circumstances:

– The GP does not have enough communication from the private doctor to expound the reasons why you require the medicine.
– When the GP does not believe the medicine is right or essential for you.
– The medicine is not licensed or is being used outside of its licensed use in the UK.
– The GP does not feel they have the specialist expertise to monitor the medicine and to make it is safe and working for you.
– The use of the medicine is not in order with either national or local prescribing guidelines.
– Your GP knows that a different similar medicine that is commonly prescribed on the NHS will be just as effective for you to take instead.

Your GP will only prescribe the medicine for you if none of the above applies and when the private doctor informs the GP why you need the medicine.

If the GP is not able to prescribe the medicine, they will give you clear reasons for this. As a result, you may get the option of getting a different but equally effective medicine on the NHS.
